How It Works

About Home Standby Power

When the utility grid goes down, a standby generator automatically turns on and supplies electricity to the home. The system includes three key parts:

1. Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
This device constantly monitors incoming utility power. The moment it detects an outage (usually within seconds), it signals the generator to start and safely switches the home off the grid and onto generator power.

2. Standby Generator
The generator—usually fueled by natural gas or liquid propane—starts automatically. Once it's running at proper speed, it sends power through the ATS to the home’s electrical panel.

3. Seamless Power to the Home
The house receives electricity just like normal. When the utility restores power, the ATS switches the home back to the grid and shuts the generator down.

The result: automatic, uninterrupted protection, even if you’re not home.
